After cracking down on the illicit trade of pirated CDs, the Anti-Piracy Cell of the Kerala Police is planning to target those uploading pornographic content into the net and its sale through memory cards.
In a recent circular issued to all the police stations in Kerala, the Cell has requested the cooperation of civil society to get information on such persons who are indulging in this trade.
The anti-piracy cell will track the web sources and book persons who conduct such trade on the net. The drive against pirated CDs and unlawful uploading of newly-released movies into various web portals too will continue.
A senior police officer attached to the Anti Piracy Cell said, “with the diminishing popularity of CDs, we have noticed that the agencies operating in the trade have started using memory cards for the purpose.”
B. Varghese, the newly-appointed Superintendent of the Anti-Piracy Cell, said action will be taken against people who sell pornographic content on memory cards.
The cell will also conduct surprise checks in mobile shops and other repairing centres nearby educational institutions. The offenders can be charged under various sections of the Information technology Act and under sections 292 A (printing/copying grossly indecent matter) and 293 (sale of obscene objects to young persons).
The main target will be persons who cash in on the trade of micro-memory cards which can be used easily in mobile phones and transferred into computers using low-cost card readers.
