Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan will hoist the party flag in connection with the delegates’ session of the fourth plenum of the CPI(M) here on Wednesday.

Party general secretary Prakash Karat will inaugurate the delegates’ session of the three-day State plenum at the Town Hall (EMS Nagar) here on Wednesday at 10 a.m.

Palakkad, a party stronghold, has gone virtually red with party flags, banners, hoardings, and graffiti all around for the plenum.

Rallies, heralding the party meet, from different parts of the district reached the headquarters on Tuesday. Party veteran T. Sivadasa Menon hoisted the party flag at Stadium Ground on Tuesday evening heralding the beginning of the plenum.

Many frontline leaders of the CPI(M) reached Palakkad for the meet during the day.

Mr. Karat reached the Coimbatore airport in the evening. State secretary and Polit Bureau member Pinarayi Vijayan was given a rousing reception at the Palakkad Junction railway station in the morning.

He was received at the station by State secretariat member A.K. Balan, district secretary C.K. Rajendran, M. Chandran, MLA, N.N. Krishnadas, former MP, and others.

Polit Bureau member Kodiyeri Balakrishnan also reached the district during the day. Mr. Achuthanandan will arrive on Wednesday morning by Amritha Express from Thiruvananthapuram.

The party State secretariat held a meeting on Tuesday to finalise programmes of the plenum. On Wednesday afternoon, Polit Bureau member S. Ramachandran Pillai will inaugurate a seminar on ‘Secularism and Indian democracy’ at the Fort Maidan (P. Govinda Pillai Nagar) at 4 p.m. Former Director-General of Police, Gujarat, R.B. Sreekumar; writer M.N. Karassery; and Fazal Ghafoor, president, Muslim Education Society, will speak at the seminar. The plenum will be attended by 408 delegates.
