Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader E. P. Jayarajan, MLA, on Saturday flayed the alleged moves by the United Democratic Front to re-induct Kerala Congress (B) legislator K.B. Ganesh Kumar into the Cabinet.

The attempts did not auger well for the democratic fabric of the country as the former Minister had made a disgraceful exit over harassment charges made by his wife, Mr. Jayarajan said.

Mr. Jayarajan, who is also the general manager of the CPI(M) mouthpiece Deshabhimani, was addressing a function here on Saturday after a releasing a book Kaaniyude Kaana Kazhcha, a compilation of select articles on social, political, and issues of public interest by M.O. Varghese, the daily’s Kasaragod bureau chief. He said democracy was facing serious challenges as most MPs, barring those from the Left, were billionaires who had the power to influence voters using money. “Will these legislators frame rules to help the marginalized sections of society,” he asked, listing the political situation in neighbouring Karnataka where some of the MLAs were running mines.

Media had a vital role to play in strengthening democracy, he said. He complimented the efforts made by Mr. Varghese in highlighting issues of public interest through his column ‘Kaani’. Mr. Jayarajan handed over the copy of the book to district panchayat president P.P. Shyamala Devi.
