Tension erupted at the Punalur-Edaman-Thenmala sector of Kollam district on Friday night when Communist Party of India (CPI) activists allegedly barged into the Edaman local committee office of the CPI(Marxist) and hacked the local committee secretary, K.P. Jagadeshan and the Democratic Youth Federation of India local committee secretary Mehaboob Khan.

The attack took place at 8.30 p.m. CPI(M) sources said that the reason for the attack is unclear. There was some dispute between the students union of the two parties earlier this week over school elections. However, those developments do not qualify for such an attack, the sources said.

Mr. Jagadeshan and Mr. Khan have been rushed to the Punalur Government Hospital in a profusely bleeding condition. A strong police force has been dispatched to the area.
