The State CPI(M) and BJP leaderships have come out strongly against each other, accusing the other of having masterminded the ongoing spree of violence in different parts of the State.
While the CPI(M) State secretariat asked its cadres and leaders to see through the political motives behind the attacks that had been “engineered by the BJP with the support of the government,” BJP State president V. Muraleedharan called for immediate intervention by the government to bring the violence to an end.
The CPI(M) secretariat alleged that the BJP was trying to build bridges with the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) by raising the “bogey of Marxist violence” and said it was clear that the widespread violence in the State over the past few days was engineered by the BJP leadership to serve its political ends.
In Kasaragod and Pattambi, the BJP-RSS activists had killed Narayanan and Najeeb, two party workers. Attacks were also staged in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur, and Kollam districts.
As many as 28 party workers have died during the tenure of the present UDF government. Of them, 17 were killed in RSS attacks. The spike in such killings was the result of the soft attitude of the government towards the RSS and BJP, the statement added.
In his statement, the BJP State president said BJP activist Abhilash was hacked to death without any provocation at Kodakara in Thrissur. In Kannur, CPI(M) workers had thrown bombs at the home of BJP district president K. Ranjith.
The CPI(M) leadership had given the green signal for such violence following the defeat in the Aruvikkara by-election and the increase in BJP’s vote share.
The CPI(M) which had opposed Raksha Bandhan and Sree Krishna Jayanti celebrations was now organising such programmes to create tension and launch attacks. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had assured a BJP delegation led by him that those who indulge in violence would be sternly dealt with, Mr. Muraleedharan said.
