Communist Party of India (CPI) district secretary Vijayan Cherukara on Tuesday resigned from the post in the wake of a television channel expose of alleged land grab.

The channel alleged that Mr. Vijayan and a district committee member of the party had reportedly supported a middleman and a Deputy Collector in the illegal allotment of surplus land at Kottathara village in Vythiri taluk in the district.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the CPI district committee here on Tuesday welcomed the Vigilance probe into the deal and decided to hand over the charges of the secretary to CPI national council member K. Rajan, MLA, till the completion of the inquiry.

“It is suspected that the issue is part of a conspiracy to tarnish the image of the party,” Sathyan Mokeri, CPI assistant secretary, told mediapersons here after the meeting. However, the party will conduct an inquiry into the issue, Mr. Mokeri added.
