Leader of Opposition in Kerala and former chief minister V.S. Achuthanandan turned 91 Monday.

“For him (Achuthanandan) Oct 20 is like any other day. He woke up as usual before sunrise and had his exercise. I do not know if any VIP called him, but people called to wish him on his birthday,” said a staff member of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) veteran leader.

Velikkakath Sankaran Achuthanandan was born Oct 20, 1923, in Alappuzha district.

One of the most popular politicians in the state, he celebrated his diamond jubilee in politics in 2014. He joined the Congress in 1939 and began his life as a Communist the following year by joining the Communist Party.

“He is one who does not celebrate any personal event. We do not have any idea if there would be any special event today (Monday),” said a close aide of Mr. Achuthanandan.
