The Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate in Mavelikara, Chengara Surendran, started his second round of campaigning at the constituency spread across Kottayam, Alappuzha and Kollam districts.
The tour of Mr. Surendran in the Chengannur Assembly segment set off from Karayma East near Mavelikara on Friday morning. “I hail from an ordinary farmworker family. My father was a tapping worker in a rubber plantation and my mother, a farm worker. Treat me like one among you and, if elected, I shall strive for the welfare of all sections of society, upholding the social responsibility and dignity of a public figure,” Mr. Surendran said.
The Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate was received warmly at Chennithala, Thripperunthura, and Mannar. A large number of farmworkers were found waiting to receive him at interior areas where the LDF had organised corner meetings. “Drinking water is a major problem for us,” said Joychan Paadiyil and Kochukunju, farmworkers.
Valsamma Mathew and Benzy Thomas, CPI leaders, said public response to the candidate was immense. People braved the scorching sun to interact with Mr. Surendran, a new face in Mavelikara.
The tour passed through Budhanur, Pandanad, Puliyur, Aala, Cheriyanad, Venmony, Mulakkuzha, and Thiruvanvandoor before he called it a day with his public address in Chengannur town.
