The Cabinet decision to abruptly transfer Devikulam Subcollector Sriram Venkitaraman has come as a big blow to the CPI that has taken a strong stand against corruption and encroachment mafia, N.K. Premachandran, MP, has said.

“But the transfer exposes the fact the CPI, the second largest constituent in the Left Democratic government, is helpless even when it comes to protecting officers with integrity working in departments coming under the portfolios of CPI ministers,” Mr. Premachandran said in a statement here on Wednesday.

In this situation, the CPI should sever ties with the LDF and quit the front and government, Mr. Premachandran said. The circumstances which led to the transfer had made things very grim for the CPI within the LDF, he said.

Even the High Court had ratified the strong steps taken by the Subcollector against encroachments in Munnar. His transfer de facto posed a challenge to the High Court, Mr. Premachandran alleged. The transfer was a reflection of the CPI(M)’s nexus with the encroachment mafia, he alleged.
