Chief Minister Oommen Chandy should convene an all-party meeting to discuss the proposed decommissioning of the Mullaperiyar dam. A representation should also be made to the Prime Minister, the Mullaperiyar Agitation Council has said.
In a press statement issued here on Wednesday, council chairman C.P. Roy said the State government should take note of the adamant stance of the Tamil Nadu government. The State government had the responsibility to make all-out efforts to get the dam decommissioned as it posed a threat to the people.
This was important as the district had experienced tremors on July 26, the statement said. People living in the downstream areas were in the grip of fear. The tremors should be seen as a pointer to the need for protecting the lives of thousands of people, it said.
The council will organise a mass rally on Sunday from Alady to Karuntharuvi Chappathu, the venue of the ongoing relay hunger strike which would complete 1,688 days then.
A political consolidation was necessary. The agitation would continue till the dam is decommissioned. The council had earlier sought a new dam but the immediate demand is the decommissioning of the old structure, the statement said.
The Tamil Nadu government's delay tactics should be dealt with at the political level, it added.
