Cop suspended after assault on doctor

A sub inspector with the Kayamkulam police station has been placed under suspension on Monday following allegations that he assaulted a doctor who was trying to help an accident victim on Sunday.

According to the police, a doctor, Paul Chandy, who runs a private hospital at Kayamkulam, along with his hospital staff had helped passengers of a car that rammed into the wall of the hospital. Some of the passengers were given first aid, while two of them required specialty treatment and Dr. Chandy was taking them to another hospital when a police team led by Mr. Kumar reached the spot.

The police officer allegedly stopped the doctor from taking the injured to hospital, saying he had to take their statements. When the doctor opposed this saying that they required urgent medical attention, he was pulled out of the car and assaulted. He was also taken to the police station, where he was trashed again. Dr. Chandy is currently under treatment in the Kayamkulam Government Hospital. The officer, according to eye-witnesses, was allegedly in an inebriated condition.

Alappuzha Superintendent of Police A. Akbar, who ordered DYSP K.M. Tomy to conduct a probe into the incident, issued orders suspending Mr. Kumar pending enquiry after Mr. Tomy submitted a preliminary report earlier in the day. Police sources said further action could be initiated against the officer since this was not the first time that he was accused of similar offences. The action will be decided once Mr. Tomy submits a complete report shortly.

Mr. Kumar, police sources said, had beaten up a speech impaired boy during a temple festival at Haripad last year. He was transferred to the Adoor police station following this. There were a couple of other similar incidents too. Mr. Kumar was transferred to the Kayamkulam station a few months back.
