Minister for Cooperation C.N. Balakrishnan has said that the government will not consider adopting any moves that will harm the cooperative sector.
“The government does not endorse the Prakash Bakshi committee report which is harmful to the cooperative sector,” Mr. Balakrishnan said while inaugurating a cooperative sector face-to-face programme organised by the Cooperative Department here on Friday.
Not profit driven
“The cooperative sector is not profit-oriented. It aims at providing succour and relief to the common man. To a large extent, the cooperatives are meeting this requirement,’’ the Minister said.
Mr. Balakrishan said the government was taking a serious note of the problems faced by the sector.
The right intervention would be made wherever required. There were complaints that the interventions of the Income Tax Department were turning away depositors from the cooperative sector establishments.
The government would find solutions to such issues, he said.
The meeting was presided over by president of the Kollam District Cooperative Bank K.C. Rajan.
Cooperative sector leaders C.V. Padmarajan, R. Ramachandran, K.R. Chandramohan, Thodiyur Ramachandran, D. Balachandran, and M.C. Binu Kumar spoke.
Various issues pertaining to the cooperative sector in the district were brought to the attention of the Minister.
The leaders welcomed the government stand on the Prakash Bakshi report and insisted that on no grounds should the recommendations of the report be implemented.
