Students of the Co-operative Medical College went on an academic strike protesting against the transfer of the medical director following which he resigned from the post here. About 500 students in the college comprising MBBS students, nursing as well as paramedical students, held a sit-in in front of the college office at the campus in Kalamassery from 9 a.m to 1 p.m.
The medical director, P. G. R. Pillai, was transferred to Punappara hospital under the Co-operative sector along with many other faculty doctors at the medical college hospital which has affected the functioning of the medical college, the students union chairman, Firas Mohammed, said.
Youth Congress leaders marched to the college campus in support of the striking students.
A meeting of the Action Council for the strike would be held in the evening to take a decision on carrying forward the strike. The students said that Ministry’s is showing more interest in developing the Punappara hospital at the cost of the medical college at Kalamassery.
