The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has decided to launch a series of agitations against the neglect of the State in the Railway Budget and the Union Budget of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government.
At another level, the party leadership decided to take its anti-liquor campaign further by organising a week-long anti-liquor awareness programmes from October 2, Gandhi Jayanti day, mainly with a view to capitalising on the emerging atmosphere against the evils of drinking, KPCC president V.M. Sudheeran said at a press conference after the day-long meeting on Friday.
In the first phase, party workers, under the auspices of the respective District Congress Committees will stage dharnas in front of Central Government offices on July 14 (Monday) to register the protest of the people of Kerala.
The decision to this effect was taken at the KPCC’s general body meeting.
The meeting also adopted a resolution against the budget proposals terming it as ‘‘one that lacked a national perspective.’’
The resolution protested against the attempts of the NDA government to tinker with the judiciary and constitutional bodies, besides undermining their functioning in spite of Supreme Court verdicts.
Political vendetta The move to implicate Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case was nothing but an act of political vendetta. The resolution expressed concern at the induction of Amit Shah as the president of BJP. In reply to a question, he said
Mr. Shah was facing court proceedings in the fake encounter cases in Gujarat. Besides, he was responsible for the communal polarisation in Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Sudheeran said.
The resolution also opposed foreign direct investment in defence and insurance sectors.
Mr. Sudheeran said that there was a near unanimity about the reopening of the 418 liquor bars, with a majority against the move. The UDF sub-committee will hold further discussions on this matter.
The KPCC meeting also passed a resolution urging the State government to name Nedumbasserry International Airport after former Chief Minister K. Karunakaran.
In another resolution, the meeting condemned the Union Home Ministry’s decision to destroy 1,50,000 files that were historically important, including those related to the martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi.
“This meeting feels that the decision is nothing but an attempt to destroy evidence of the role of Hindutva forces in Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination.’’
