Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat said here on Saturday that the Congress had mastered the “art” of money-making from every policy and government scheme that was launched.
Inaugurating an election meeting of T.M. Thomas Isaac, the Left Democratic Front's candidate in the Alappuzha constituency at Komalapuram, near here, Mr. Karat said the mastery of the Congress in this ‘art' was evident from the 2G spectrum and S-Band scam, the Commonwealth Games fiasco and the Adarsh Housing Society controversy, to name a few. There were no areas at the State-level and at the Centre that were left alone by the Congress in its money-minting spree, he said.
A comparison between the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance and the LDF was more than enough to validate the call to allow the LDF continue in power in the State, Mr. Karat said, stating that the existence of the LDF was also a guarantee to the protection of secularism and communal harmony. This should happen in Kerala, which was a State that had fully recognised that the Left was the only alternative to the Congress, and not the BJP.
The CPI(M) general secretary said that none could accuse the V.S. Achuthanandan government of corruption. The LDF regime, on the other hand, had taken steps to check corruption in all areas of life, with the imprisonment of former minister R. Balakrishna Pillai providing the perfect answer to critics.
The LDF government had pursued its idea of alternative development in all spheres, and one of the best examples for its highly successful industrial policy was evident in Alappuzha's Komalapuram, where a spinning mill that was shut down for long was revived and re-opened by the government. There were hardly any such examples in the entire country.
The LDF should be re-elected to power to take forward the struggle against the anti-people policies of the UPA and for continuation on the path of alternative development, he said adding that the victory of Dr. Isaac in Alappuzha would be a victory for the entire LDF team in Kerala.
