Senior Congress leader and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary Kodoth Govindan Nair passed away at the Vellore Christian Medical College late last night following protracted illness, family sources here said on Sunday.

Govindan Nair (68) was undergoing treatment at hospital in Ernakulam over the last six months after he suffered brain haemorrhage. With his health condition continue to remain critical, he was shifted to the Vellore hospital on December 17 and the end came around midnight last night.

A lawyer by profession, Mr Nair entered into the political arena right from his student days and elected Kasaragod District Congress Committee president.

A staunch loyalist of former Chief Minister K. Karunakaran, Mr Nair’s name got into prominence in political circles after he decided to contest for the Rajya Sabha seat defying dictates of the Central party leadership.

Nair later joined hands with K. Karunakaran as he floated Democratic Indira Congress (DIC).

A leader credited with clean image, Nair later re-joined the parent party along with Karunakaran and was nominated as General Secretary of the PCC.

Mr. Nair is survived by two daughters.

The mortal remains of Nair, expected to reach here from Vellore late this evening is likely to be cremated tomorrow, according to sources here.
