Senior CITU leader M.K. Pandhe on Monday said it was the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who had facilitated the escape of Warren Anderson, the then head of Union Carbide Corporation, after the Bhopal gas disaster.
At an interaction with mediapersons at Aluva, Mr. Pandhe said Mr. Anderson was liable to be jailed for up to 10 years in jail. But, the Congress government headed by Mr. Gandhi provided him a safe passage.
Mr. Pandhe pointed out that the all-India platform of trade unions would hold a convention in Delhi on July 15 to oppose the Union government's policy of public sector disinvestment and privatisation which had rendered lakhs of workers jobless. On September 18, the unions would go on a token strike and on October 18, a protest day would be observed.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Pandhe greeted the CITU, INTUC and BMS workers who have been on a sit-in for the 71st day in front of the Cochin Port Trust.
