The relation between the Communist Marxist Party (CMP) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) leadership, which had virtually gone into a deep freeze in the recent past, appears to be warming up with the Congress leaders extending an assurance to find a lasting solution to the grievances, including those concerning the Pariyaram Medical College, within a month.
The thaw came during the talks both sides had here on Sunday.
Speaking to media persons after the talks, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the issue concerning the future of Pariyaram and Kochi Medical Colleges would be discussed in the UDF on the basis of a report of the UDF sub-committee headed by CMP leader M.V. Raghavan and also the report sought from the District Collectors of Kannur and Ernakulam regarding the assets and liabilities of the two institutions. ‘‘The government had not made any formal decision regarding the takeover of Pariyaram Medical College,’’ he said.
The Chief Minister said a final decision on the issue would be taken within a month. He expressed the confidence that the representation of CMP in various boards and corporations would also be settled within a month. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala said after the meeting that, ‘‘we cannot even think of an UDF without the CMP. There is no question of the CMP leaving the coalition,’’ he said.
He said the grievances raised by the party had merit. He said the party was also ready to hold talks with the Janadhipathya Samrakshana Samithi.
