Concerns were raised over the lack of an efficient surveillance mechanism along the coastal belt of the district during the meeting of the coastal vigilance committee held here on Monday. The issue came up for discussion at the meeting chaired by district Collector N. Padmakumar and attended by representatives of the fishing community, police personnel and officials of various departments.

It was pointed out that many abandoned buildings were being used for anti-social activities. Some are being used as criminal hideouts. They also said home-stays and other rental accommodation facilities were being set-up on land registered in the names of fishermen.
