3,272 pedestrians killed till June 30 this year

As many as 14,445 cases related to atrocities against women and 1,671 cases related to crime against children have been registered in the State till June 30 since the United Democratic Front came to power, Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan has said.

Replying to questions in the Assembly on Monday, Mr. Radhakrishnan said that the rate of reporting and the quick action initiated by the government had led to reports about a spurt in crime in the State.

Complaint boxes would be put up in all police stations for women and children to submit their complaints in strict confidence. The government would seek the High Court’s opinion on conducting in-camera hearing in such cases.

An electronic beat system had been proposed to monitor the functioning of the police personnel who go on beat. The system would be introduced in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode.

As many as 3,272 pedestrians were killed and 21,665 injured in road accidents between January and June 30 this year. Thirty traffic safety centres which functioned round-the-clock had been planned to enhance traffic safety. The proposed centres would be equipped with radars, devices to prevent signal violations, speed surveillance cameras and e-payment facilities. Functioning of unlicensed rent-a-car agencies were paving the way for theft and anti-social activities, he said.

3,868 cases pending

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that 3,868 cases were pending before Lok Ayukta.

Six new seismographs at Rs.3 crore would be set up in Idukki. The government would seek the reports of the District Collectors of Thrissur and Kollam regarding the damage caused by the recent tremors.

The government would consider a proposal for reducing the use of flex boards for government functions and programmes.

As many as 595 applications for dying in harness appointments were pending at the cell for making such appointments. This was in addition to the applications pending at various departments. The government had created 549 supernumerary posts for making appointments in this category, he said

Finance Minister K.M. Mani said that the government was planning to reduce the ticket price of Karunya lottery and start daily draw too, he said.
