The government has decided to construct 28 major roads in the State at a cost of Rs.10,000 crore, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said.
Each road would be constructed as a special project and talks were on to finalise the details of the new roads, half of which were coming up in the Malabar region, Mr. Chandy said.
More details on the project should be announced in a month, he said at a function to inaugurate the reconstruction of the 26-km Kasaragod-Kanhangad Coastal State Highway, being undertaken by the Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP), at Old Press Club Junction here on Saturday.
The new roads would be constructed after ensuring that the requisite funds were mobilised by availing loans at cheaper rates, he said, adding that the government would not levy toll for the newly constructed roads.
He said the delay and dispute over land acquisition for laying new roads were delaying projects in the State.
The reconstruction of the coastal highway would be completed in 24 months.
