Opposition Leader Oommen Chandy has called for disciplinary action against the police personnel who, according to him, were instrumental in abetting the violent incidents on the campus of the nearly two-centuries old CMS College on Wednesday. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Mr. Chandy said he had already taken up the issue with the Home Minister.
The Opposition Leader along with Jose K. Mani, MP, and other UDF leaders visited the campus and interacted with the college authorities and said he hoped the government would initiate steps to bring back normality on the campus at the earliest.
Meanwhile, a brief period of tension, followed by an uneasy calm prevailed on the CMS College campus on Thursday, which witnessed unprecedented campus violence perpetrated by agitating SFI activists a day before.
Tension prevailed for a brief period when a few SFI activists tried to disrupt the interaction between the UDF delegation, which visited the campus, and the college authorities. The college authorities shouted back at the agitating students and a section of them chased the students away, before the police, who took a liberal attitude to the agitation on Wednesday, swung into action and took away the SFI activists, brining a semblance of peace back to the campus.
A delegation led by N. Hari, State secretary of Yuva Morcha, also visited the campus and met the college authorities. He alleged that the violence on the CMS College campus was only an extension of the policies the SFI was implementing on other campuses.
