CM to inaugurate Kannur varsity building

Administration already functioning from 14-acre campus at Thavakkara

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will formally inaugurate the newly-built administrative building of the Kannur University at Thavakkara here on May 15.

The administrative headquarters of the university is already functioning in the three-storey building at Thavakkara after it had been shifted from the Mangattuparamba campus here.

The works for constructing the remaining four storeys of the building would begin soon, Vice-Chancellor M.K. Abdul Khader said at a press conference here on Tuesday.

The 14-acre campus at Thavakkara would soon have an aquatic biodiversity park being set up at an estimated cost of Rs. 1.76 crore, he said adding that the park would have a 1.4 acre pond. Work on it would start after the monsoon, he said.

At the function, works for a slew of various other developmental projects would also commence, Dr. Khader said.

Education Minister P.K. Abdu Rabb would lay the foundation stone for the Student Amenity Centre being built on the Thavakkara campus at an estimated cost of Rs. 4 crore. Cultural Affairs Minister K.C. Joseph would inaugurate work on the Inter-University Centre for Tropical Diversity being set up on the campus at Manathavady, he said.

The inauguration of the work for the aquatic and biodiversity park would be done by Agriculture Minister K.P. Mohanan at the function.

Single window

Youth Welfare Minister P.K. Jayalakshmi would inaugurate the single window online admission system being started from this academic year.

The system would allow a student to send application for 20 colleges, he added.

Foreign students

Also being inaugurated on the occasion is the International Academics of the university, Dr. Khader said informing that this centre was part of the university’s plan to go global.

Ten per cent of seats in every course of the university would be earmarked for foreign students, he added.

Solar power

The university’s project for introducing solar power on all its campuses would also be inaugurated at the function as also an industry-linked course in wood science, he said.

A ring road on the Thavakkara campus would be inaugurated that day, he added.

MPs P.K. Sreemathy and P. Karunakaran, MLAs A.P. Abdullakutty, James Mathew, C. Krishnan, K.K. Narayanan, T.V. Rajesh, K.M. Shaji and Sunny Joseph would also participate at the function, the Vice-Chancellor said.
