CITU to violate trawling ban

May 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - PATHANAMTHITTA:

CITU State vice president Anathalavattom Anandan has said that fishermen will violate the trawling ban in protest against the new Central policy of permitting unregulated fishing on the Kerala coast by foreign ships.

He was talking to presspersons here on Saturday.

As per existing rules, foreign ships are permitted to carry out fishing only 22 nautical miles from the coast. This is besides a total ban on fishing in the coastal area in the months of June and July. Mr. Anandan alleged that the Centre had restricted this ban on fishing only for ordinary fishermen, while exempting foreign ships from its purview.

He said the CITU would stand firm with ordinary fishermen to protect their interests.
