Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) district secretary K.P. Sugunan passed away during a public meeting held by the Left Democratic Front here on Thursday in support of a State-level hartal demanding a ban on Endosulfan.

Mr. Sugunan, 62, collapsed during the public meeting held at Thirunakkara following a demonstration. He was rushed to the district hospital here in a police jeep. He was declared dead at the hospital. The incident occurred at 11.45 a.m. The body was later shifted to his house.

Mr. Sugunan hailed from Iranjal at Kanjikuzhi. He is survived by wife, M.V. Ramani, a retired tahsildar.

A former Kottayam district panchayat president, Mr. Sugunan was district secretariat member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He had served as CITU general council member, and president of the District Cooperative Hospital.

The body will be kept at the CPI(M) office here on Saturday and will be cremated within the courtyard of his house at 3 p.m.
