The Kerala Council of Churches has called for a ban on Endosulfan, including its production.

In a statement here on Saturday, council president Gabriel Mar Gregorios said that studies and commissions had confirmed the grave threat posed by the pesticide on human lives. “Nearly 70 countries have recognised the dangerous side-effects and have banned the pesticide. The Centre should not hesitate to adopt such a similar policy,” he said.

Mar Gregorios said the entire issue surrounding Endosulfan revealed the negative face of market competition. A review of market policies should be conducted along with a complete ban on the pesticide, he said.

The decision to call for a ban was taken at a special meeting of the council.
