Dalit autorickshaw driver E. Chithralekha who had started an indefinite sit-in in front of her house under construction at Kattampally demanding the withdrawal of the State government order cancelling previous government’s allotment of five cents for the construction called off the stir on Friday following the High Court’s order staying the government’s order.

District Congress Committee president Satheeshan Pacheni said in a release said that Ms. Chithralekha called off the agitation at 4 p.m. in response to his appeal and MLA K.M. Shaji’s to end the stir in view of the High Court stay.

Court order

He said the court stayed the order in a petition filed by Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) vice president Lali Vincent challenging the government order.

The government’s order cancelling the allotment of the land was viewed as a continuation of the Communist Party of India (Marxist)’s vendetta against her.

The reason cited for the revocation of the allotment was that Ms. Chithralekha owned a six-cent land at her native village Edat, near Payyannur.

The previous United Democratic Front (UDF) government allotted the five-cent land following her agitation in front of the Collectorate demanding her safety as she had been allegedly under threat from local CPI(M) and CITU workers at Edat.

She had alleged that her autorickshaw had been torched and she had been living under threat from the CPI(M) workers since 2004. She left Edat as she could not live there peacefully, she had said.
