Kochi: ‘Bala Sasthra Vijnanotsavam’, the grand finale of the International Year of Light (IYL) festival, which got under way at Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) turned out to be a beacon of knowledge for young students.

Experts treated students to some fascinating information on light-based technologies. They started off with questions on the principle of light being used to adulteration of edible oil, methods of making light sensors, use of light to distinguish between original and natural silks and the way the eye of the user is scanned using a mobile phone.

“Children were given a ‘light kit’ to experiment with the basic principles they had studied,” said V.K. Damodaran, IYL Kerala coordinator.

Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Kerala, Chairman Suresh Nair explained the need for educating children on the science of light in view of its extensive use in health care, communication, computing, and sensing. As many as 157 students are attending the programme.

The event is organised by IEEE, along with Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad, Energy Management Centre (EMC), Kerala, and Nest Group.
