The Cabinet on Wednesday asked the Chief Secretary P. Prabhakaran to examine the controversial remark of Principal Secretary (Industries) T. Balakrishnan about Coca-Cola unit at Plachimada (Palakkad district).

Mr. Balakrishnan had told a face to face programme with industrialists on Monday that he regretted that the Coca-Cola unit could not be saved.

Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan told journalists after the Cabinet meeting that the Chief Secretary would look into the matter and submit a report to the Cabinet at its next meeting.

The Chief Minister had stated on Tuesday that the stand of the Principal Secretary was not that of the government. It was not the policy of the government to encourage indiscriminate exploitation of ground water.

It may be recalled that the an expert-committee, constituted by the State government with the Additional Chief Secretary K. Jayakumar as chairman, had recommended that the Coca-Cola company should be made to pay compensation for environmental and other damages caused by it at Plachimada.
