Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala on Tuesday asked the CPI(M) leadership to explain the “conflicting stands” taken by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan and State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan on their party's alliance with the Jamaat-e-Islami.
In a statement here, Mr. Chennithala said Mr. Achuthanandan had openly stated that his party did not have any kind of relationship with the Jamaat-e-Islami, which continued to function against national interests, but Mr. Vijayan's “secret talks” with the organisation had led to the suspicion that there was some foul play. He sought the reaction of the LDF constituents and the Chief Minister on the emerging ties between the CPI(M) and the organisation.
The talks held on March 20 were kept a secret until it was disclosed by Hameed Vanimel who quit the party. The prevaricating statements by the leaders of the CPI(M) and the Jamaat-e-Islami clearly indicated foul play and the constituents of the Left Democratic Front were not informed about this. Mr. Chennithala, pointing out the fact that the CPI(M) leadership had termed the organisation ‘anti-national' soon after the Lok Sabha elections, demanded the details of the “discussions”.
The onus was on Mr. Vijayan to explain how the Jamaat-e-Islami had become acceptable after having dubbed it as anti-national.
