Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will leave for Bahrain on Thursday to receive the United Nations global award for public service from Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The United Nations Public Service Forum and Awards Ceremony, a global capacity-building gathering on public governance, is taking place from June 24 to 27 in Manama, based on the theme ‘Transformative e-Government and Innovation: Creating a Better Future for All.’

The awards for public service will be distributed on Thursday at the valedictory function.

The UN expects some 700 participants to attend the function, including high-level personalities, Ministers, senior government officials, and representatives from civil society, academia, the private sector, and international and regional organisations.

This is for the first time that the UN award for public service was being distributed at a venue in a Gulf country.

Mr. Chandy was selected (for his mass contact programme) from among entries from 50 Asia-Pacific countries.
