Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has filed a suit before the Additional District Magistrate Court here seeking Rs.1 lakh as compensation from Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan for his allegation that Mr. Chandy is facing investigation in 31 corruption cases and that his Cabinet members have 136 cases against them.

Mr. Chandy has also moved the Election Commission accusing Mr. Achuthanandan of having committed breach of the model code of conduct by attempting to defame him through speeches, debates and interviews. The Chief Minister has appealed to the Commission to inquire into the ‘hate speech’ made by Mr. Achuthanandan at Dharmadam in Kannur on April 22 and the allegations made by him in interviews granted to TV channels and while participating in debates. He has also sought a directive to the media not to publish ‘unverified allegations’.

In his petition, Mr. Chandy said Mr. Achuthanandan’s allegations were ‘scandalous’ and ‘libellous’ and ‘showers sarcasm’ on him only to gain publicity and recognition in a negative way.
