Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has challenged the Opposition to prove any one of the allegations levelled against him, instead of staging day-and-night dharnas and unleashing maligning propaganda against the UDF government.

Mr Chandy was addressing a mammoth crowd of party workers at a reception organised by the District Congress Committee at the St Stephen’s Cathedral auditorium here on Friday evening.

He sought cooperation of the Opposition in the State government’s efforts to address problems facing the people through the mass contact programme, instead of continuing protests across the State.

The United Nations Public Service Award was conferred on the nation and the State of Kerala, and it was sad that the Opposition appeared to have taken it as a personal recognition for the Chief Minister, he said.

Mr. Chandy said the mass contact programme was his life’s mission aimed at bridging the gap between the administration and the people through effective interventions so as to strengthen the democracy.

This year’s mass contact programme would start from Thiruvananthapuram on August 12, he added.

Solar scam

Mr. Chandy said the solar scam was nothing but a case of sheer fraud and cheating. He said the State government had neither lost a single rupee in this regard nor extended any help or support to the accused.

Those who have raised accusing fingers against the UDF government could not disprove this bare truth, he said. The government was not against any kind of probe into the solar scam. However, the Opposition demand for a judicial probe was aimed at sabotaging the ongoing police investigation, he alleged.

Instead of staging agitations, the LDF and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) should point out evidences to prove their allegations against the Chief Minister and the government, Mr. Chandy said.

“The Opposition was for finishing their political opponents. They want my blood. But, there is no question of the government and the UDF bowing before this kind of undemocratic pressure tactics of the CPI(M) and the Opposition,” Mr. Chandy said.

He alleged that the CPI(M) as well as the LDF had lost their mass base. “Thegovernment will go ahead with its development agenda and the CPI(M) will have to face defeat this time too,” said Mr. Chandy, emotionally charging his supporters.

‘Blackmailing politics’

Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan alleged that the State witnessed “a new kind of blackmailing politics against the government perpetrated by its political foes as well as certain friends.”

Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash accused the LDF of making futile attempts to sabotage welfare schemes of the UDF government. P. Mohanraj, DCC president, and Rajmohan Unnithan, P. Saratchandra Prasad, both KPCC office-bearers, also spoke.
