The measures implemented at the Chakkarakkal police station here to create an ambience that will make visitors comfortable are now being extended to all police stations across the State as part of increasing the cooperation between the people and the police.
The innovative measures introduced in the police station in the district was reported by The Hindu in an article on July 10 on the measures taken by the Station House Officer (SHO) and personnel to make the station more people-friendly.
State Police Chief Loknath Behera has instructed the police to implement similar innovative ideas in all police stations in the State. Senior police officers in different police ranges in the State have initiated measures to ensure compliance with the SPC’s direction in this regard. Inspector General of Police (Kannur Range) Mahipal Yadav has issued a circular seeking from all District Police Chiefs (DPC) in the Kannur Range compliance report on the SPC’s direction.
The measures implemented in the Chakkarakkal police station under the leadership of the Sub-Inspector and SHO P. Biju include playing of soothing instrumental music to make the station ambience less stressful, establishment of a library and reading room for the visitors and screening of awareness-creating videos on law enforcement, among others.
Attempts have also been made by the station personnel to give people involved in offences book-reading and appreciation assignments as a correctional measure.
When contacted, Mr. Yadav said the SPC has enclosed the clipping of The Hindu report and sent it to the officers with an instruction to replicate the innovative methods of the Chakkarakkal police or customised methods in all police stations. He termed the work of the Chakkarakkal SHO and his subordinates as a commendable work for improving police-public relationship.
The circular sent by Mr. Yadav notes that the public perception about police force is that the latter still continues to be governed by the colonial rules of 1861 and the outdated procedures that are still in existence.
The efforts of the Chakkarakkal station are an exception to this perception, it adds.
It also says that the SPC has expressed satisfaction over the sincere work of police officers/personnel at the station and appreciated the SHO.
