Thressiamma Chacko got her first voter identity card on her 100th birth anniversary on Thursday and none other than the District Collector reached her residence at Kolakkad here to personally hand over the card.

An official press release informing this said the centenarian is now waiting for May 16 to come to cast her first vote in her life. A permanent resident of Kolakkad, located in the eastern hill area of the district, since 1969 when she had migrated with her husband from Thrissur, she never thought of exercising her franchise. Elections had come and gone but she never felt like casting her vote. She was quoted as saying that she had no time to think about elections as she had been struggling for her family to make both ends meet.

Her indifference towards election ended recently when she expressed her desire to her son to cast her maiden vote on May 16. Arrangements had been made to apply for the voters ID card through the local Akshaya centre.

“Ms. Chacko should be an inspiration for all voters to exercise their franchise in the coming election,” District Collector P. Bala Kiran said. Handing over the voter ID card to her on her 100th birth anniversary was a memorable event at a time when the initiatives were being under way to create voter awareness under the systematic voter education and electoral participation.
