The Aluva police have registered a case against those UDF activists who allegedly created a ruckus with their unruly journey on board the Kochi metro train in the name of a ‘Janakeeya Yatra’ on June 20.
According to Vishal Johnson, circle inspector, a case has been registered against a large number of activists under the Metro Railways (maintenance and protection) Act 2002. The action followed a complaint in this direction from the assistant line superintendent of Kochi metro.
The Act stipulates no demonstration of any kind whatsoever shall be held on any part of the metro railway or its premises. Violators shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months, or with a fine which may extend to Rs.1,000, or with both.
The ‘Janakeeya Yatra’ between Aluva and Palarivattom led by former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy was in protest against the alleged neglect meted out to its leaders at the inauguration of Kochi metro. Owing to the melee caused by the activists in their haste to get out of the station, the Automatic Fare Collection gates at Palarivattom station had to be completely opened.
They also shouted slogans inside the train and at metro stations, which has been construed as violation of metro policies. The demonstration led to widespread complaints of passenger hardships.
