Parishioners attached to the Christ Church of the Church of South India ushered in the Christmas spirit into Kollam city on Sunday with the church choir putting up a spectacular carol show.
The choir with a strength of 25, led by R.D. Thomson, performed for over two hours.
The Christ Church Christmas carol singing has Anglican origins, church committee secretary John George said.
Sunday’s event comprised Christmas carols in English and Malayalam.
In TamilMr. George said that on December 21, the church would organise a Christmas carol programme in Tamil. Various groups have also begun visiting houses to sing carols.
Singing carols to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ is an important aspect of invoking the spirit of Christmas. The practice of singing Christmas carols in churches was initiated by St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226), it is said.
The famous Christmas carol Silent Night was written by Austrian priest Joseph Mohr in the early 19th century, and was later translated into hundreds of languages.
