Delay in the conduct of a fresh survey on the proposed Kanhangad-Kaniyuru rail line has led to an action committee meeting up to stress for the quick start of the survey.
The 75-km rail line stretch provides easiest access to Bengaluru from north Kerala.
The Railways had already successfully completed both the traffic and feasibility surveys on the 40-km-long Kanhangad-Panathur part of the rail line stretch.
But a fresh survey on the entire route was announced last year by former Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda in his maiden Railway Budget, shortly after the BJP-led government came to power at the Centre.
Private firm
Accordingly, a Hyderabad-based private firm was scheduled to have begun the survey works in October last.
But it has not yet taken off.
Demanding the start of the survey, the meeting by the Kanhangad-Kaniyuru rail line action committee decided that a delegation, headed by P. Karunakaran, MP, and Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, would soon visit New Delhi to take up the issue with the Centre.
Delegates
The delegates will meet Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, Union Surface Transport Minister Nithin Gadkari, and Union Law Minister Sadanada Gowda.
The meeting also decided to take steps to realise the proposed Gokarna-Kanyakumari hill highway that links major tourist centres in Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu by linking the existing road network.
Activists of various political and social organisations also took part in the meeting.
