Call to set up separate department for senior citizens, widows

The State Government should constitute an independent department exclusively for the welfare of senior citizens, physically challenged persons and widows, said Mr Simon Britto, MLA.

Mr Britto was inaugurating a seminar, jointly organised by Kerala Vikalanga Association and Janavedi, here on Wednesday.

According to the MLA, the State Human Rights Commission as well as the welfare board for the physically challenged should be given powers to punish the guilty.

He has also called for raising various monthly pensions under social security scheme to Rs 1000.

Association president, Rasheed Anappara, presided the function.

A.Sureshkumar, Zakeer Alankarathu, municipal councilors, Laila Beevi, Jerry Easow Oommen, Khan Shahjahan, Rajamma Konni, M.K.Baburaj, Roy Thomas, V.S.Sivanandan, Amminikutty, P.C.Varghese and Sajida Hussein, leaders of various non-governmental organisations, spoke. Mr A.Jayakumar, lawyer, took a class.

Food grain kits were also distributed among 150 poor families, later.
