The State Cabinet has approved the terms of reference of the Hariharan Nair Commission appointed to study and report on the backwardness of Nadar community.

The commission will recommend measures needed to solve the social, economic, and educational backwardness of the community. For ameliorating their education status, the commission will make proposals, including scholarships for girl students, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told the media after a Cabinet meeting here on Wednesday.

The commission will also report on steps to obtain reservation benefits from the Centre to the members of the community who belong to different religions. Legal steps will be proposed for entering caste of birth and religion in school certificates and government documents relating to Nadars.

It will examine the representation of the Nadar community in government service and higher education sector and suggest measures to bridge any shortfall in representation.

The commission would submit its report in six months, Mr. Chandy said.
