The State leadership of the BJP is meeting in Kochi this afternoon to decide on fielding candidates in the by-elections from Kannur, Ernakulam and Alappuzha Assembly constituencies in Kerala.

The meeting will consider the reports of district units concerned before deciding whether to field candidates. There is an opinion in the party that it need not field candidates this time since the party is weak in all the three constituencies.

If it does not field candidated, extending support to independents would be considered, party State secretary M. T. Ramesh said.

The BJP has not fared well in the elections to the Lok Sabha this year. Its vote-share in the State had dropped from more than 10 per cent to nearly six per cent.
