A bypass surgery will be performed on one of the accused in the T.P. Chandrasekharan murder case, P.P. Ramakrishnan, member of the Thalassery area committee of the Communist Party of India(Marxist), at the Medical College Hospital (MCH) here on Friday.

The 68-year-old CPI (M) activist was arrested on charge hatching a conspiracy and also hiring a killer-gang to eliminate Chandrasekharan two years ago. He was admitted to the MCH following variations in the electrocardiogram (ECG) while in judicial custody a day ago.

A team of doctors led by K.M. Kuriakose, Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, MCH, will carry out the six-hour operation on Ramakrishnan. The Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) will take at least 4 to 5 hours. “Blocks have been found in three systems—right coronary artery, left anterior descending artery and left circumflex coronary artery. We have planned to perform four grafts to remove the blockage,” said Dr. Kuriakose, attached to the Super Specialty Hospital of the medical college.

Previously Ramakrishnan had been taking medicines and he had also undergone an angioplasty. The medical college authorities had taken the consent of the family members, he said.

The Department of Prisons has sanctioned a sum of Rs.1 lakh for the operation.
