By-election: UDF wins

The United Democratic Front (UDF) took the lone seat to which by-election was held in Kottayam Municipal Council, with a comfortable majority of 395 votes, when results were declared on Wednesday.

Out of the 1198 votes, 843, polled. UDF’s Anusha Krishnan bagged 615 votes against the 220 by LDF’s Sheela Chandrasekharan. Seven votes were invalid and one vote, missing.

Elections were held on Tuesday to the Ward 25 of the municipality which was rendered vacant when the rebel UDF representative and former chairperson of the municipality Reeba Varkey stood down after she was disqualified by the State Election Commission under provisions of anti defection law.
