Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh gestures during a consultation with farmers on Bt brinjal issue in Bangalore on Saturday.

The decision on the introduction of Bt brinjal, to be announced in New Delhi on February 10, will not make anybody happy, said Jairam Ramesh, Minister of State for Environment and Forests. However, it will be a decision that will reflect the general sentiments of people, he said.

Talking to media persons here on Monday Mr. Ramesh said, “I have to be sensitive to the public sentiments, responsible to scientists, look after the interests of the consumers and producers too. I have to think of the conservation of biodiversity and the need to reduce the use of pesticides in agriculture. It is not going to be an easy decision anyway.”
