Opposition Leader V.S. Achuthanandan has said the government should take up the natural calamity in Idukki as a national calamity and provide support to the affected on a war-footing.

Speaking to mediapersons at Adimaly after visiting Cheeyappara, Walara and Kunjithanny, which were hit by landslips, Mr. Achuthanandan said the Opposition would provide all support to the government in giving help to the affected people.

It should not be a mere announcement, he said adding that the people had suffered heavily in the landslips.

Provide compensation

Hundred of acres of agriculture land had been washed away, houses damaged and many injured. They should be provided compensation without delay, he said.

The government should build dwellings for those whose houses had been destroyed, the Leader of the Opposition said.

Mr Achuthanandan said the government hospitals in Idukki district lacked facilities and doctors.

When calamities such as this happened, it became all the more important to reach the victims to the hospitals, he said adding that the facilities at the hospitals should be improved.

He was accompanied by CPI(M) district secretary K.K. Jayachandran, MLA, S.Rajendran, MLA, LDF district convener C.K. Krishnankutty and CPI district secretary K.K. Sivaraman.
