Speaker P. Sriramakrishnan has called for effective steps to take the Dalits to the mainstream.

The Speaker was inaugurating the centenary celebrations of the Sree Moolam Praja Sabha entry of Dalit leader Kurumban Daivathan at the Muloor Memorial SNDP Hall at Elavumthitta on Friday.

He said Kurumban Daivathan was a prominent personality in the social reformation stream of Kerala. Kerala witnessed a reformative movement through Bhakti even before the social reformation, and Poonthanam’s devotional poem Jnanappana with its sharp attacks against the then social issues was a pointer in this regard.

‘Pan-India issues’

He said the problems faced by Dalits in Kerala and across the country should be subjected to detailed discussions.

“We have got a large number of non-governmental organisations functioning with the proclaimed mission of Dalit uplift. It is high time we took a serious look at what results they have produced over such a long period of time,” he said.
