Opposition Leader Oommen Chandy has urged the Union government to take immediate steps to bring back about 500 Keralites who were languishing at the deportation centre in Saudi Arabia.
In letters to Minister for External Affairs S. M. Krishna and Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi, the Opposition Leader noted that many of them had emigrated to Saudi Arabia without proper documents. Others were people who had completed their prison terms.
Mr. Chandy noted that they lacked papers for identification and money for travel. Many were sick and were not getting proper treatment.
He suggested that talks should be held at the higher levels for their urgent release. A Malayali official should be posted at the Indian Embassy in Riyad for helping them.
