The bridge across the Shiriya river at Kumbla, on the Kasaragod-Mangaluru stretch of the national highway, is in a dilapidated state. Iron rods inside the concrete slabs are protruding out from the road surface, thanks to the lack of timely maintenance works. The exposed iron rods are posing a threat to motorists.

Threat to motorists

The bridge trembles every time heavy vehicles move on it, says a truck driver. The situation is likely to worsen with the onset of monsoon.

The deep potholes on the bridge pose a death trap, especially for two-wheeler riders, he says.
