Gender representation was the predominant feature in the painting exhibition of the Bangalore-based artist P.V. Bindu that got under way here on Saturday.

The exhibition of 36 paintings of Ms. Bindu at the Thalassery Arts Society here draws the viewers’ attention to the thematic representation of gender and body using digital and oil-based colours and forms filtered through digital and medical scan media.

The exhibition was inaugurated by the Kerala Lalithakala Akademy member Sivakrishnan.

Artist Harindran Chalad and art critic A.T. Mohanraj were also present.

Reflecting gender consciousness

Ms. Bindu in her presentation on her artistic concerns and oeuvre said that her works reflect the gender consciousness of women who live under the stress and strain of gender-based hegemony.

Contemporary women are struggling to cope with the battle of the sexes at various levels, she said.

She said hat gender-based discrimination is rampant in society in spite of the fruits of modernism.

Most of the paintings on display are filled with motifs of DNA and chromosomal patterns.

Having studied botany for her graduation and then settled in the IT field, she said that she wanted to give a scientific perspective to the gender question to throw light on gender discrimination.

She also said that her works also seek to articulate that men are also victims of the culture of gender discrimination in the society.

Dr. Mohanraj presented a paper on the trends found in the artistic works and performances of women in the country and abroad.
