Blast probe: Kollam police in Madurai

November 29, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - KOLLAM:

Following the arrest of three suspected Al-Qaeda activists at Madurai, a team from the Kollam police will reach Madurai on Tuesday since the arrested trio are suspected to be involved in the June 15, 2016 bomb explosion at the civil station complex here.

One person was injured in the low intensity explosion. Teams from the Central investigating agencies had also inspected the scene of the Kollam blast and expressed possibilities of a link to the Chittoor court complex blast in Andhra Pradesh on April 7. The Kollam police had then exchanged information on the blast with the Chittoor police.

Later similar explosions had taken place at court complexes in Nelloor, Malappuram, and Mysore.

The explosion at the Kollam court complex was from an improvised explosive device (IED). It was planted in a discarded jeep of the Labour Department parked near the munsif court inside the complex.

The IED was kept inside an aluminium snack box and planted near the left hind wheel of the jeep.

The explosive was connected to a battery to detonate it at a given time.
